UPDATE — October 4, 2026

Truth in Focus has resumed reporting on the Northern Cheyenne government dispute as additional court rulings, records and independently reported developments have become available. This Editor’s Note is being preserved as a record of the newsroom’s October 2 decision to pause rather than publish beyond the evidence then available.

Truth in Focus has spent extensive time reviewing the ongoing Northern Cheyenne government dispute.

That work has included reading public reports and resolutions, reviewing hearing material, comparing financial records, examining court documents, searching publicly available sources, and contacting individuals and agencies for additional information.

At some point, responsible reporting requires recognizing the limits of the available record.

There are still important questions that cannot be answered from the documents currently available to Truth in Focus. In several instances, the records needed to verify competing claims have either not been located publicly or have not been provided in response to our requests.

That does not mean those records do not exist.

It means we do not have them.

Truth in Focus will not fill those gaps with assumptions, Facebook arguments, rumors or conclusions that the documentary record does not support.

We have published what the available records allow us to report. We have identified contradictions where they exist. We have asked for supporting documents where claims remain unresolved. And we have given people and institutions opportunities to provide additional information.

For now, further reporting on these particular questions will pause until additional records become available.

If Tribal officials, former officials, attorneys, agencies, community members or other sources possess documents that clarify the record, Truth in Focus welcomes them.

If those records change or correct something we have reported, we will say so.

There are also other issues affecting Northern Cheyenne communities and Eastern Montana that deserve reporting — education, teacher shortages, water, public services, household costs and other matters that directly affect people’s daily lives.

Truth in Focus will continue reporting on those issues while remaining ready to return to this story when the documentary record moves forward.

The standard remains simple: show us the records.
