Drivers across southeastern Montana should keep an eye on changing conditions as a new round of unsettled weather approaches. The National Weather Service in Billings forecasts a chance of rain or mixed precipitation in eastern and southeastern Montana Sunday evening into Monday, followed by another system around Tuesday. For people traveling between Ashland, Lame Deer, Colstrip, and other rural communities, higher stretches of roadway deserve special attention as temperatures approach freezing.
What the forecast says
The National Weather Service zone forecast issued at 11:50 a.m. MDT Sunday, October 25, calls for mostly sunny conditions and highs in the upper 50s across Southern Rosebud County, including Lame Deer, with a 30% chance of rain Sunday evening and temperatures near 30°F overnight. Monday is expected to be milder and mostly dry, with highs in the mid-50s.
Tuesday, October 27: Rain and snow showers are likely during the morning around Lame Deer, transitioning toward rain showers in the afternoon. The forecast gives a 60% chance of precipitation and daytime highs in the lower 50s. In Northern Rosebud County, including Colstrip and Forsyth, forecasters indicate rain showers Tuesday, with a slight chance of snow late in the morning and an 80% chance of measurable precipitation. These are probabilities and forecasts, not a declaration of snow accumulation or a road closure.
Why a higher road or divide can change the picture
Anyone who drives over a divide in southeastern Montana knows the weather at the top of a hill can be different from conditions down in town. Elevation, wind, and pavement temperature may affect whether precipitation falls as rain or wet snow and whether a road becomes slick. That does not mean every divide will be snow-covered during this system; travelers should check actual conditions immediately before departure.
The Montana 511 road-condition map provides road reports, incident notices, available cameras, and weather overlays. Drivers may also dial 511 in Montana or call 800-226-7623 for roadway information. Those reports are the appropriate place to confirm travel impacts; this article does not claim any particular highway is closed or icy right now.
Practical preparations
If you will be traveling early in the morning or after dark, allow extra travel time and check both your destination forecast and the road conditions along the route. Keep fuel in the vehicle, charge your phone, and carry basic cold-weather supplies. Conditions can change quickly even when a forecast calls for little or no accumulation.
