DEVELOPING — Updated late Wednesday, Oct. 7
ASHLAND, Mont. — Montanans know the joke: the weather can have an attitude problem. A warm fall day can feel almost like summer, and a few days later the conversation can turn to snow.
New development: The National Weather Service Billings office is now featuring a Potential Snowfall Outlook as the weekend system comes into better focus. NWS continues to stress that the elevation where rain changes to snow is uncertain, but confidence has increased that rain and wet snow will affect portions of the region from late Saturday into Monday.
That is the pattern taking shape across southeastern Montana this weekend. The National Weather Service in Billings is forecasting warm conditions through Friday, followed by a strong cooldown Saturday into Sunday as rain spreads across the region and begins mixing with snow in some lower-elevation communities.
For Ashland, the latest National Weather Service point forecast calls for sunshine and a high near 88 degrees Friday, followed by a high near 73 Saturday. The forecast then turns sharply colder: showers are likely Saturday night, rain and snow showers are likely Sunday, and rain and snow continue Sunday night. The latest Ashland point forecast puts precipitation chances around 70 percent Sunday, 80 percent Sunday night and 60 percent on Columbus Day, with nighttime temperatures falling into the 30s.
Lame Deer and southern Rosebud County are expected to see a similar transition. The latest zone forecast calls for highs in the upper 80s Friday, cooling into the mid-70s Saturday. Rain chances increase Saturday night as lows fall into the 30s, followed by a much colder Sunday.
Around Colstrip, Friday temperatures are forecast in the 80s before Saturday turns cooler. Rain and snow become likely Saturday night into Sunday, with Sunday’s high only in the 40s and overnight temperatures near freezing. The National Weather Service currently places precipitation chances around 70 percent Sunday and 80 percent Sunday night.
Broadus and Powder River County are also included in the change. Friday remains warm, followed by a much colder Sunday. The latest zone forecast increases the concern Sunday night, when rain and snow showers are expected with precipitation chances near 90 percent. Rain and snow showers remain likely into Columbus Day before tapering later in the day.
Snow potential is increasing, but amounts remain uncertain
The National Weather Service is now explicitly highlighting a Potential Snowfall Outlook for the approaching system. That is a meaningful change from simply mentioning a chance of mixed precipitation, but it is not yet a reliable snowfall-total forecast for every lower-elevation community. NWS says the rain-to-snow transition elevation remains uncertain, and its forecast discussion says the greatest accumulation potential is still expected in mountains and foothills west of Billings.
For Ashland, Lame Deer, Colstrip and Broadus, the practical message tonight is that the chance of seeing wet snow has become more credible and the Sunday-Monday period deserves closer monitoring. Truth in Focus will update this developing report if the National Weather Service issues location-specific snowfall amounts, winter-weather headlines, or a materially different forecast.
That matters for more than travel. Rural households may need time to check furnaces, space heaters, wood or pellet supplies, outdoor plumbing, livestock water, vehicles and other cold-weather preparations. People who rely on relatives, neighbors or community programs for heating assistance may also want to make those contacts before the weekend.
Truth in Focus is expanding local weather coverage
Truth in Focus has been reporting heavily on government, public records and community issues, but local public-service information is part of the newsroom’s mission as well. Not everyone has reliable internet service, unlimited mobile data or time to search several different government websites when conditions are changing.
Our local weather coverage will focus primarily on Ashland, Lame Deer, Colstrip and Broadus. Readers can check the Truth in Focus Weather page for local forecast information, and the site also maintains a Live Fire Map for wildfire situational awareness. We will continue improving those tools so readers can get more of the information they need without constantly leaving the site.
Forecasts can change quickly, especially several days out. Truth in Focus will continue checking National Weather Service updates as the weekend system approaches and will post meaningful changes.
